I don't have the credentials to call anyone a genius, but I know someone who does.  When I continued my musical education at CSUF, I remember how Dr. Howard Swan's face lit up when I mentioned that I had sung for Richard Raub.   That subtle compliment from one of his most highly esteemed peers confirmed that I had been first-hand witness to a rare convergence of charismata-- virtuosity, inspiration and the ability to communicate them.

Though some have described Richard as demanding, I never knew him to be unpleasant.  The clarity of his aural visions guided us and drew us in.  Working to realize those visions was always a pure joy.

Though professional music was not my own calling, I have grown to appreciate more and more the gift and privilege I had to study voice and conducting under Mr. Raub.  The passion for technical excellence he evoked in his students has set the standard for all my pursuts.

I studied voice, Harpsichord, Organ, Electronic Music and Music Theory/Composition at OCC and CSUF from 1974 to '77 and sang Bass with the OCC Chorale, Chamber Singers  (and an impromptu barbershop quartet) as well as a few outings with the OCC Alumni Choir, ending in about 1982.

I fondly remember preparing for the concerts of Schicksalslied, Ein Deutches Requiem (twice!), Verdi's Requiem Mass, Bach's b-minor Mass and Bach's Cantata 150 ("Nach Dir Herr, Verlanget Mich".   My favorite short pieces include  "Mary Hynes,"
"Ubi Caritas," "Super Flumina Babylonis,"
"
Ainsi Qu'on Oit le Cerf Bruire," and  "Zum Schluss" (Nun, ihr Musen, genug!)

My time at OCC under the tutelage of Richard Raub was a real gift. Richard was not only a shining light and an inspiration to me musically, he actually tolerated my insanity!  His kindness and patience ( which I KNOW I tried  sorely...) taught me to  work hard,  stay true to  myself, and to love and respect the music. "Doot Doot "  my dear friend. I carry a little bit of you in who I am.

I have spent my life as a singer and performer. I have done several recordings and my first book ,The Zen of Singing , was recently published. I still travel and record, and I am currently teaching music and theatre at the O.C. High School of the Arts.

How do I begin to tell you how important Richard was to me as a fellow musician and colleague?  He was such a bright light for me and others and now that light has left us.  I consider it such an honor to have been Richard's accompanist at OCC from 1978-1981.  Working beside him everyday was so invaluable to me both musically and personally and was so pivotal in my musical development.  I shall forever treasure what he taught me and will be eternally indebted to him for allowing me into his world.  He was definitely a "musician's musician".  I feel truly blessed to have known him as a friend and colleague.

Jason Harney left OCC in the spring of 1993 to pursue degrees in Choral Conducting and Music Education at Chapman Univeristy.  Since graduating in 1996 with the Choral Conducting award,  he has been a choral music teacher in the public school system.  Jason's choirs have toured across the country, as well as in Italy, Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria, Hong Kong, and China.  Mr. Harney's choirs have won numerous awards as well as performing as featured performers at ACDA conventions.

"It was my great pleasure to sing under the baton of Richard Raub from 1989 - 1993.  As a young man who knew he wanted to be a conductor, but was immature and unaware of the rigors of the profession, could I have had a better mentor than Richard?  He taught my very first conducting class ever, but more important was the opportunity to watch him rehearse week after week.  His influence lives in me every time I step in front of my choirs.

I have been married to my wife Mindy for almost eleven years now, and we have three beautiful kids: Clara - 5, Laura - 2, and Evan - 5 mo. I am looking forward to catching up with many old friends next month."

I was in Mr. Raub's 2 choirs during 1974 and 1975 and in the night group around 1985.

I attended the two February 2008 events and afterwards found myself awe-struck by friends and family's comments and life experiences with Richard.

I loved to sing and Mr. Raub's excellent instruction made me a vocal musician!

If anybody from  my era (1973-1976 or any era for that matter) is interested in getting a  group from "choir days" together for a social gathering (just once or annually), I think we all would benefit from it and it would be fun!

To all Mr. Raub's family/friends, thank you for putting on such a wonderful tribute for this wonderful man.  I'm honored to have attended; this event will stay with me forever.

Sincerely,
Nancy Clay LaTouche

Richard gave me my first music lessons when I walked into his conducting class and "argued" that the catalog said this class had NO prerequisites and couldn't I learn to read music as I went along. From there... he taught me and taught me: responsibility, respect for others (including those around me and those whose music I was performing), an appreciation for wine and good food, and priceless tips on bread baking. (My family still uses the bread knife that Richard and Connie gave me for Christmas in 1981.) He was my mentor and he "kick started" much of what my life has become. There will be no other like him for me or the world.
